For all of you Water Ballast guys, do you sail regularly with the 110 jib or have you found a need to move up to a larger sail?

I use a 135 Genoa and have installed outboard Genoa tracks and combing winches. In three years of sailing the San Juans and Gulf Islands, I have had only one occasion of having too much canvas out in a gusty wind area while entering a narrow pass. I was also trying to catch another sailboat ahead of me. I rounded up and quickly regained headway and learned when to reel in a little Genoa.

The 110 does well above 8 knots and because a light nylon drifter will work well up to 8, I think it is a reasonable way to go. At 155% and with light cloth it will give much better performance in light air than a 135 heavy dacron genoa. The drifter is fairly easy to manage and fun to fly.

Paulb, what are your typical winds? I am only trying to estimate and compare.

Arlyn, where did you get that drifter?

I bought a drifter/reacher from Ullman and I'm very happy with it. I find that I hesitiate to put it up if I think the wind is going to be gusty and shifty, as it gets difficult to control and get down if wind begins to pipe up. For steady light air conditions and a long reach or downwind run, it's outstanding and I highly recommend this sail to compliment the standard 110.

The San Juans and Gulf Island winds can vary from almost nothing for days to Gale warnings for days. The tricky part is the gusting of winds as you navigate passes or go from narrow cliff areas to open straits. The wind can vary in minutes from 2-5 knots to gusts of 20+ knots. Then there is the tide current which depending on direction and speed can create cross chop that can be uncomfortable.

If you listen to weather reports, check tide/current tables, and have your jiffy reefer ready to use, it is a fun, safe area to sail.
