I'm new to the group, so bear with me as I get up to hull speed. I've just graduated from a Catalina-22 to a tall rig Catalina-25. My question is; Does the Boom set lower, or closer to the deck, on the Tall Rig 25? I'm used to plenty of head room while working in the cockpit of the 22, but was surprised to see how much lower the boom was in the 25. Did I improperly rig something? Is this normal, and has anyone done anything different - like using a standard rig main on a tall rig.
Regarding the tall rig boom height, yes, the tall rig boom does sit one foot lower than a standard rig boom and the mast is two feet higher giving the tall rig a 3 foot longer mainsail luff.
As to options to raise the boom, some have used an SR main to raise the boom or tuck in a semi-permanent reef to raise the boom some.
A few weeks ago I saw a post here on the Forum suggesting use of a Standard Rig Capri 25 mainsail, especially if you want to use a Bimini and the lower TR boom height causes a clearance problem. The Capri sail has a luff length about 14" shorter than the Tall Rig Catalina 25 main, so it raises your boom a bit more than a foot, and the foot length and roach shape are approximately the same, so it fits nicely on your Catalina boom. I suppose that using a Capri sail would violate the Catalina one-design rule so if you are into racing, you probably can't do a sail swap like this.
