On my new 250WB, the mast raising shrouds come with those little black rubber plusd that keep the main shrouds from coming out of the mast. Does this mean that the raising shrouds are meant to be permanently left on the mast, or are they stored in a locker until needed (I hope the latter?)

Hi John,
My mast raising shrouds (AKA Baby Stays) are only 4-5 feet long. I store them down below when not raising or lowering the mast.

I assume 'black rubber plusd' means 'black rubber plugs' and that the 'mast raising shrouds' are the same as what I call the 'baby stays.' Working on that assumption, yes, you remove the 'baby stays' once the mast is raised and the forestay attached and the winch strap eased off.

Once the mast is up, my baby stays are very tight and I had trouble releasing the pelican hooks. I finally added a small toggle to each attachment point on the stanchion to give the stay some effective 'extra length' and then used the barrel adjustment to get the proper fit. Works much easier.

You are correct; black rubber plusd are really black rubber plugs. No telling what comes out when the keyboard is set in 'Enigma' encryption mode!

<font color="blue"><font size="4"><font face="Comic Sans MS">I always carry the baby stays on board.
Last year sailing the Straight of Georgia a main stay came loose and was swinging in the wind ,pin came out, I used the baby stays to support the mast till I reached the next port.

Paul, that was using your head! I carry my baby stays board as well but never thought about using them for that. Good idea. Thanks.

I start with my baby stays very loose. The mast has no chance of moving that much and as it gets to about 45 degrees, the main shrouds start to take over. Alieviates the need to "pry" open the pelican hooks on the baby stays.
