I have one of these in my 87. I assumed it was standard all the way through the range. Mine has a big crack in in where someone stood with their heel on it and it hasn't been eas trying to find a replacement.
or you could go to the lexan hatch from Cruising Concepts. A little expensive, but very nice looking upgrade. Do you know if this was a Catalina option or a PO project?
I have an 82 FK/TR and she has the same skylight in the V-berth. I like it there. A new hatch would be nice but the existing skylight works for me. I have enough new things to install as it is.
I too have an 81' but my skylight is clear. It was factory installed so I think they might have been standard on some years. I've yet to see a Catalina 25 without one.
That skylight is original equipment... Catalina Direct sells replacement lenses (inside and out), but I'll use something stronger like a piece of Lexan next time. The original material (and CD's) is too flimsy for a deck application like that.
Sorry everyone, something else just occurred to me. When I take the skylight off, will the core be visible or is the opening on the deck glassed. Don't want to take the lens off and then have to run for the epoxy saturator syringe.
Daniel, how could that be a bad thing? If you take it off and need the epoxy then it was a doubly good thing that you fixed it. And everyone at the slips will be way impressed that you dealt with a wet core!
On mine, the outer lense was sitting in a cutout in the fiberglass and on top of a slight rim of the plywood core, on a bed of silicone sealer. I just pried it up and then scraped all the silicone I could out of the opening. I then rebedded the new lense (from CD) in enough silicone to create a small, even bead around the edge. Next time, I'll cut a piece of 1/2" Lexan to shape, bevel the edges, and seal that in place. Meanwhile, I have to try not to step on the skylight!
I think it's a neat idea. Mine doesn't seem to leak and if I don't step on it maybe it will stay that way! Yes Frank I love the new boat! Well new to me. I just can't wait to start spending some weekends at the lake! Thanks Gene
My approach to fixing the flabby plastic problem was to replace it with one cut from bronze-tone laminated safety glass and embed it with 3M 4000.
It puts a nice golden light inside and if you leave off the diffuser piece of plastic, you can lounge and look up at the mast and see if it looks straight.
