Well there are two speeds to the winch, kinda like ridding a bike up a steep hill is the best way to put it. Say you are sheeting in the genoa, the wind is strong, or your wife is winching the sheet, you are winching as normal clockwise, and the line is loaded up and slowing down, now with a two speed winch you can start turning counter clockwise and it shifts the gears. It really makes sheeting the head sail very easy. They also have a three speed winch.
When you turn the winch handle clockwise, you're pulling the line in faster, but with less power. When you're turning the winch handle counter clockwise, you're pulling the line in at a slower rate, but you have more pulling power.
Also, single speed winches only draw in the sheet when you turn the winch handle clockwise. Two speed winches draw the line in, regardless of whether you turn the winch handle clockwise or counterclockwise. As a result, the jib trimmer can pump the winch handle forward and back with one hand and tail the jibsheet with the other.
Also, the more powerful low speed makes it easier to make fine adjustments to the jibsheet when it's heavily loaded.
IMHO, self tailers are nice for cruising, but 2 speeds are definitely the choice for racing.
As these are just sitting on the floor in the garage I am motavated in selling them, but 200 is a little low for me, I could easliy put them on Ebay and get 150-200 per unit, put the shipping cost of 20.00 per winch to cover having to throw them in a box and take them to the UPS Store. And have to cover my cost for selling them there.
So lets say the first offer of 250.00 plus shipping gets you both winches, and if you pay the 300.00 I will personally take them apart, clean the old grease out and put in new grease. These are nice winches and they have many more years of great use. If you have single speed winches for your genoa sheets right now, you will absolutly love how these work.
