I have installed self tailing Harkin winches on the coaming box, but would like to know if anyone has a suggestion as to what angle to place the stripping arm. I currently have mine set at approx. the 8 o'clock position (bow being 12).

I recommend it be straight toward the user. If you're going to be positioned a little aft of it, inside the cockpit when using it then the location you described sounds just right.
Nice to have, aren't they?

Second that recommendation by Bubba. I have a wheel and the crew handling sheets is located in the cockpit just in front of the wheel with the arm pointing directly toward them, about 10 o'clock (starboard) and 2 o'clock (port), otherwise it sounds like you have them set correctly.

Ya know, I was only visualizing the starboard winch when you mentioned the eight o'clock position. You'd want to mirror that on the port side. So I should just leave it at "facing the user" wherever that person is going to be. That position may be different depending on whether you have a wheel or tiller and whether you'll be single-handing a lot or normally have crew.
What ever you do, those self-tailing winches will be great to have!

they are great. I took the idea from Arlyn and mounted them on the coaming box so that I can do all the work and not have to bother the "Captain", if you know what I mean. Sorry about the confusion, the Port winch is at @ 4 o'clock and the starboard is 8

Do you have any pictures of your installation? What did the winches cost? How do you route the sheets? Do the sheets interfere with either the safety wires or shrouds?

Thanks,

DOn

I ran my sheets almost identical to Bryans. The only difference is I used different routing blocks and my winches are set aft just a bit. They dont interfere with any other lines. I bought them at West Marine and I think they were $765 for the pair.. I dont have a picture of the sheet routing but will take some later today. It appears that Bryans winch arm is about the 9 o'clock position.
