Ok, we have spent 12 nights on board JD in our first 3 months of ownership. But this Saturday was the first spent when the water was choppy all night long.
Could not sleep because of the banging! I lowered the keel to full down, half up, and all the way up. It banged all night long!
This morning I went overboard to inspect for damage. It's the first time I've actually gazed up into the keel's housing. WOW! It's huge! There must be a couple of inches on either side of the keel, no wonder it slaps around so much! When fully raised I could see it banging the sides of the housing at the lower(aft) end of the keel. (no damage found)
We plan on spending at least 5 nights a month on board, next 5 day weekend is in October, but we should be able to get out again this month for a couple of days. But without the swinger keeping us up all night.!
Has anyone done anything to fix this? So far I have considered.... .. Putting wedge shaped blocks on both sides of the keel box front, middle and aft. .. Putting spongy blocks in the aft end of the keel box. .. Putting a keel rope from port to stbd with a line to wrap around the keel. .. Adding a keel block to the lower end of the keel itself.
Thanks for directing me to catalina direct. Not sure if the keel centering kit will do that much, but I did find the furler sock and other stuff. We're going to order one of the furler socks. New post on that.
Shims should be added to the center board shaft so as to make the board fit quite tight to the blocks... doing this will eliminate almost all of the clunk with the board in the up position.
I made shims from some plastic materiel and hole saws. The shims are also available from Catalina and I expect Catalina Direct.
Don't forget when replacing the bolts on the blocks to use lock tight but use the weaker hold stuff.
