Is there a data base to look up the specific production date of a boat from the hull number. Curious about the date that our 1980 actually rolled out of production.

For what it's worth, my 2005 C250 looks like it was done with a Dremel tool freehand.

Mine looks like it was done with a vibrating engraver.

Mine has that and it's an 85.

Worse, there were multiple formats before then. Another detail to be aware of if an insurance company complains: HINs can be 11-13 characters if the builder chooses to add or omit one digit from the numeric hull number. (12 characters is standard, but not inviolable. The Catalina 22, for example, has far surpassed 10,000 units.)

We're here to serve...

See I learned something new myself. Didn't know the Hin# were different pre 1984.

Some newer members and visitors here might not be aware we have Hull No. 0001 in our midst!

Yup--November 1979 as a 1980 model.

A = August 1979
B = September
C = October
D = November
.
F = January 1980

Thank you all for the info. I was wondering what month M was correlating with. Good to know the ID system was different pre 1984. The last 4 of my HIN is M80D, so I guess that would put the production month in Nov.

A 1983 model was given a HIN using a format that was used through the 1984 model year. For CTYK3456M83C:

CTY = Catalina Yachts.
K = model (in our case the C-25, 'H' is used for the C-22).
3456 = hull number for the entire production run.
M = Model Year format (one of two).
83 = 1983 model year.
C = came out of the mold in October of 1982 as a 1983 model. (August is "A", first month of the model year by USCG regulation.)

If the final letter was H, the boat was built in March of 1983 as a 1983 model. After 1984, the format was as Scott describes.

The last 4 digits of your hull ID tells you the month and year. for an example my hull id is CTYK5688F787. The F is the month (June) and the 87 is the year. The 5688 is my sail # and production #.
