Experiencing jib halyard wrap on my new-to-me 1980 C-25. Never had a roller furler before now. For those who don’t use a halyard restrainer/fairlead (don’t have time to install before this weekend’s regatta) and instead chose to go with a pendant at the top (or bottom), what material do you use? Wire? Small synthetic line? Suggestions welcome.

Most furlers seem to recommend 1-2 inches of gap between the top of the swivel, and the end of the foil As far as the pendant material, a short length of spectra line would work fine. Probably 3/16" spectra would be ideal.

Thanks! Very helpful.

If you have a sail that is short on the hoist, and suffer halyard wrap, moving the top swivelup by installing a pendant at will help alleviate wrap. Basically you want the halyard to angle away from the forestay by 15° or so to prevent wrap. Also, make sure you have a good halyard tension before furling the sail.

Yes, thanks. I am about to undertake this exact task. What do most folks recommend for the pendant material? Would a small synthetic line suffice (kind of a soft shackle), or should it be wire? Or does it matter?

Also, should I shoot to have the swivel all the way up where it's touching the sheaves at the masthead, or leave some room for halyard stretch to help with shaping the headsail?

Thanks again.
