Time for me to order a new main sail. I do have the original mainsail, but the foot looks awfully short on the boom. Any ideas where I can find what the original boom length was?

thanks!

According to the parts catalogue, the boom length is 11' 0". The mainsail isn't supposed to go all the way to the end of the boom. Click on this link. http://catalina-capri-25s.org/manbro/C25Partsmanual.pdf

The standard mainsail
Foot = 9.58
Leech = 26.50
Luff = 24.66

Tall rig mainsail
Foot = 9.58
Leech = 29.25
Luff -27.66

As you can see in this photo the foot doesn't go all the way to the back of the boom.

Maybe the longer boom keeps the main sheet aft and gives a bit more room in the cockpit.. maybe shortens the length of the main sheet.

Some space is required from the clew to the end of the boon to facilitate the outhaul. If you do not have one you might consider installing one. It will help with sail shape for more efficient sail performance. I ordered a new main from Catalina Direct and I am real pleased with it.

Also if the foot of the sail was longer the roach might hit the backstay everytime you tacked.

You are right... that's exactly what it is...

The Catalina 25 boom is longer than on most boats to get the mainsheet out behind the back of the helmsperson. If the boat has been reconfigured to have the traveler on the coach roof or just behind the companionway then the boom can be cut much shorter.

It's true that you need a little room for the outhaul, but it doesn't take very much (a few inches is plenty).
