To answer that age old question: What does a Catalina 25 mark IV weigh? Totally empty, no rudder, no motor, trailer weight ~1200 lbs, tongue weight 460 lbs, answer is:

6320 lbs

In this case we used a weight distribution hitch, so most of the tongue weight is transferred to the tow vehicle axles, with some pushed back on the trailer axles. Tongue weight measured unhitched was over 650 lbs. (using a tongue scale). The 460 lbs sited was an estimate on how much was pushed forward on to the tow vehicle (our weight distribution hitch does not have a built in scale). We do not have measure of weight for the tow vehicle alone.

Using a hand held RV scale and having each individual trailer tire roll over it, with a traditional hitch, we saw a total tailer axle weight of ~7200 lbs. But the error rate is pretty high, over 10%.

BTW: I have to speak highly of towing with a distribution hitch vs tradition hitch. Made all the different in terms of wear and tear on the tow vehicle rear suspension. Total trip of almost 1000 miles, mostly on I-95, which is currently entirely under construction from Richmond to New York. Don't get me started about the joys of towing across the GW bridge.

With our C-22, it is possible to put the tow vehicle on the steer axle scale and the trailer on the drive axle scale, lower the trailer tongue wheel enough to take the weight off the ball. then you have substantially all of the trailer/boat weight on the one scale. Is the C-25 rig too long to do that? You'd probably have to ask the scale operator to wait while you do that before printing the ticket, but you might have a more accurate weight of the boat, assuming you already know that the empty trailer weighs.

Gotta ask -- the mark IV, I presume, is the later version with wing keel?

Also, depending now here in the NY area you are going it might be better (less stressful) albeit longer to take 287 north and back down 87 across the Tappan-Zee/Cuomo bridge - or if heading to Long Island Verrazano Narrows

The "Mark" designation was never used by Catalina in connection with C25s or C27s. It was made up by a C25 owner. After production ceased on C25s and C27s, Catalina began using it to distinguish between versions of some of their bigger boats.
