A few times in the past 2-3 years I received an unsolicited email from someone who was touting "Buy our boater email list". The email went on to say that the email list included hundreds of boaters in your area that you can advertise to. Different slices and dices were available, by boat type, boat, size, price, geography, etc. For someone in the boating trades, I'd say that would be pretty useful. I asked the sender to remove my name and email from their list, which of course only validated my email as "live".

Today I received another unsolicited email from Captain Somebody who titled his email "Hurricane IRMA!" He is a marine surveyor with a phone number in CT. I'm not sure whether the good Capt got my name from a similar email service, but whatever.

Does this creep you out the way it does me? Right now the weather service is saying there's a 50%-50% chance of the storm heading toward the western Gulf of Mexico (not again!) or right up the Atlantic seaboard like the storm of '38.

Why would I need a marine surveyor? To assess the value of Passage for insurance purposes?

I haven't received this, but my primary question is where are they getting their data from? Since I'm apparently left out, we can deduce it's not from here or BoatUS--I think the only folks to whom I've given that stuff. (Well, there's my insurance company...)

The models are pretty much in agreement that Irma is headed north--nothing yet on how close to the US or where landfall might occur.

Mailing list data can come from any number of sources. My guess is they can hack Forums like ours, sailing texts or regional sailing blogs, they may have access to US Power Squadron data, I've attended several boat shows where I've updated my information, was a member of Brewers Marinas for 4 years, I have a login on WestMarine, Hamilton Supplies, Defender, Catalina Direct and Boats.net. My email is listed with all of these vendors and organizations. My guess is that selling email addresses is in the "fine print" of the user agreement and even if its not, they probably do it anyway. I know that the Catalina forum does not sell our addresses.

Regarding the path of Irma, how much would you theoretically wager that the storm will strike any locale in particular? While there's not much I know about Hurricanes, I do know they're completely unpredictable. Look at Harvey - when it entered the western Caribbean it was less than a tropical depression, but once it hit the 86 plus degree water of the Gulf of Mexico it exploded into a Category IV! I would not bet any money on the eventual path of the storm, but certainly know that in mid September anywhere west of 60 degrees west and north of 20 degrees north will likely see some tropical activity.

At one point our officers considered letting a member use the Assoc. Members personal info to market his software program.
A loud and vigorous debate went on for some time. Ultimately it was dropped and our members never were bothered by solicitation.
I can only hope that will remain Assoc. policy

Ever google anything boat related or shopped on Amazon? Selling you info, interests and activities is their business. For Google, it's their only business.

I found out what happened. I was a member of the Connecticut Marine Trades Association and the former chairperson traditionally warned all members of tropical storms as a public service. He still does.

He is a marine surveyor, so of course, he could potentially stand to gain if any of the email recipients wanted an insurance survey. Typically, however insurance policies insure for "declared value" of smaller boats, so an itemized listing of equipment and improvements may not be relevant.

Obviously a sharp marketer. Also, in light of damage a hurricane could cause, he may be an interesting source however. Some folks I know have had less than good success when an insurance claim after a "named" storm is filed.

Peter, I don't think that Jose will affect your end of the Sound, but if you'd like his details, let me know. I've since struck up a conversation with him and I'd be glad to forward you his contact. You can ping me on bruce 2 sail at aol dot com ( of course I still have my ancient AOL account! )
