I just received an email from Westmarine. This chartplotter is on sale tomorrow only (Oct. 28), for $359.99. I don't know anything about this model, but a $240. discount makes it look very interesting. The model is a GARMIN echoMAP™ 54dv Chartplotter/Sonar Combo with DownVü Scanning Sonar. There's more info at this link. http://www.westmarine.com/buy/garmin--echomap-54dv-chartplotter-sonar-combo-with-downv-scanning-sonar--17397779?cm_mmc=EM-_-Promo-_-N/A-_-N/A

I was pretty interested in this, but the transducer that's included is transom mount only (unless you're willing to give up one of the two sonar channels), and it's huge. Look at about the third review down where the guy has pictures showing it mounted to his speed boat.

I might still wander over to the local WM at lunch & see if they've got one so I can see for myself

I don't know why the guy thinks it's huge, but it's reported dimensions are the same as my Garmin 541S. Dimensions: 5 7/8"W x 6 1/8"H x 2 3/8"D

IIRC, it's Garmin's normal marketing practice to include a transom mounted transducer with their chartplotters. That way, you have to buy another transducer if you want it thru hull. I bought my chartplotter to use as a chartplotter, and never hooked up the depth sounder.

I paid almost this much for a handheld gps. If anyone is thinking about buying a gps, I think this one is worth a look, especially at this price. I just wanted to give our members a chance to check it out.

Yep, Same as my 545. Put it on a RAM swing mount and your good to go.

I think you're talking about the dimensions of the display? I was talking about the size of the transducer itself.

Here are the pictures I was referring to:

I don't know if there's any way for that transducer to be mounted to our transoms. Like I said, I'm going to take a look for one of them at my local WM and see what I think.

If it's like mine, it isn't designed to extend much below the transom, so mounted clear of the rudder on a C-25 it's going to be out of the water--especially when on the windward side.

So I took a look over lunch and decided to pull the trigger. The transducer is huge, easily 9" long. I talked at length with their electronics guy about it, and he was of the opinion that you could (relatively) easily build a waterproof containment system for the larger transducer to use it as a shoot-through, with the expectation that you're going to lose some of the signal. However, at some point I may be able to pull the boat out of the water, and replace the existing dead Airmar transducer with a compatible Garmin / Airmar transducer that'd give me full capability...maybe.

They didn't actually have one, so I have to wait for it to show up from the warehouse next week, but that's OK.

I have the 74dv (7 inch screen version) on my powerboat and can attest that it is a powerful and easy to use tool. I also can attest that the transducer IS huge and leaves quite a rooster-tail when running - at least on a power boat. If you are interested, I would call Garmin and ask their help desk for information about either mounting options for the transducer and/or other alternative transducers, including internal mount. Having such an instrument on one boat makes me wish for one on the C25. Also, their have been equally great deals on the larger 74dv model and the larger screen is MUCH easier to read. I expect these deals will continue and may even get better as Garmin introduces new models every 12-18 months and that is how long this generation has been on the market.
