I noticed from looking at pictures zoomed in, some people were using gin poles made of wood. This is a very dangerous idea. At one exact point there will be a huge amount of compression on the pole. I have personally seen three different skippers shatter their poles to splinters, not a solid break. Never seen a sturdy piece of conduit shatter or break, but have seen it put a dent in the bottom of the front mast when rigged to be wedged directly to the mast. My PO did this so now we have a nice dent that will have to be reinforced.

I prefer an A Frame. A Frames divide the force in half none of which is on the mast and provides lateral stability to the A Frame. With a Gin pole all the force is centered to a single point with no lateral stability. Just my 2 cents.
