Lower shroud chain plate direction on 1978 C25 standard rig? I raise and lower my mast frequently and am confused as to the proper direction of the lower shroud chain plates. Should they be positioned like the uppers? that is turned toward the mast step or possibly turned inline with the centerline of the boat. My shrouds are not sealed and before i do so i would like to have this correct so that they do not bind up raising and lowering my rig.

Thanks Slim

The parts catalog shows them pointing at the mast http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/manbro/C25Partsmanual.pdf. I was thinking mine were inline with the center-line of the boat.

Yep, Turned toward the mast so you don't bend the attaching shackle.

I did find this articale at http://stingysailor.com/2015/08/01/turn-those-chain-plate-bolts/ and it seems to make sence. It is being used on a C22 but same principle at work i would guess.

Those chainplates really should not rotate at all. Your inviting water leaks and deck damage. There is a screw hole in the flange so you can put a screw into the deck to hold the chainplate from rotating. I believe that some early boats didn't have them so CD offers an upgrade kit.http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/37_39/chainplate-eyebolt-retrofit-kit-for-c-25-c-27.cfm
