beat this 40 footer back to his yacht club by 10 minutes. The wifey said that maybe he wasn't racing you. I replied: 1) We were both going the same direction, that is racing. 2) he sailed down to meet me and turned back upwind when he got to me. 3) he tacked to cover whenever I did. I think he was racing, although amazingly he could or would not point as high as my wing keel.
Two sailboats on the same tack on one body of water = a race!
My favorite was on Long Island Sound years ago--my wife and I in our 17' O'Day Daysailer, sailing alongside a ~65' Swan with a uniformed crew, in very light air, and gradually catching and passing him. You could see the crew peeking at us, trying not to be seen noticing, tweaking various lines... I didn't pick out an owner or captain, but it appeared somebody wasn't amused! ("Pssst--move that car forward a little... Bring the traveler up...")
