I just purchased a new to me 1999 Catalina 250. The PO did much of his sailing from the rear observation seats. I'm pretty sure most of the time he was on the starboard side as there are a fair amount of cracks where the seat frame bolts to the boat.
My question is should I be concerned about this cracking? Is there anything I could easily do to repair it? Should I avoid sitting on those 2 chairs?
The seats are actually in great shape, its where the seat frame bolts into the hull of the boat that is showing cracks. All 3 mounting spots show spider cracks around the flange that bolts to the hull.
Short of refinishing the surface after ensuring the backing washers are suitable and secure, not sure what you can do about this one.
Certainly consider loosening the securing nuts and rebedding the cat bird seat mounting with Butyl tape so that water doesn't intrude via the bolt holes.
I think that area is solid fiberglass, no wooden core. So a little water isn't going to cause big problems. The spider cracks probably caused by overtightening and/or heavy weight load. Instead of re-bedding, a little Captain Tolley's Crack Cure might be adequate, and much easier to do.

Thanks, I will look into that product. The previous owner was a big boy at 6'5" so weight load I am sure was a factor. I am not as tall but I am sure I will be adding a heavy weight load if I ever sit there.
Those seats look like the best seats in the house. Does anyone know the weight limit on those? If I do sit my butt on those things will I eventually cause more than just cosmetic damage?
