I had the pleasure of taking a 10 year old boy and his mother sailing yesterday. They both learned the basic things on a Sunfish. The boy was in our junior sailing class last year at the club. I had a great time watching them learn to handle the bigger boat. We had some unusual tacks and one accidental jib with an accidental heave to thrown in. Watching the progress both of them made was very enjoyable for me. The last two tacks on the way upwind to the marina were fairly good. Was sorry to have to come in for the day. They plan to get a copy of Don Gillette's book on sail trim. I look forward to having them sail my boat again.

The great thing about starting on a Sunfish (or similar) is learning the basic relationship between the wind, the sail, the ballast (themselves) and the direction of the boat, as well as the fundamentals of tacking and jibing (the latter of which I try to get newbies to learn how not to do for a while)--all without having to deal with winches, cleats, huge sails, and a boat that's sort of a bus. It also greatly helps to overcome the natural fear of "tipping" (heeling), which they learn has a direct relationship to making some speed up-wind.

Good for you--passing along the passion for the wind!
