What's the correct way to store a deep cycle battery in the off season? Would it be a good idea to hook up a couple-three 12 volt lights bulbs in a series to drain it and then recharge it a few times?

Steve,

This is from the Exide site on marine batteries,

<b>"What is the proper way to store marine batteries?"</b>

Clean battery case and terminals with baking soda and water, being careful to make sure the solution does not get into the battery. Always check to ensure the battery is fully charged before storing. Batteries stored in a discharged state are susceptible to freezing and an increased rate of further discharge. Store in a cool dry place (not next to a furnace or other heat source) and out of reach of children and pets. Check the state of charge every 45-60 days and add distilled water if needed.

Here's the link.

Don's words from Exide seem to be good to me.

i have taken my battery out of the boat, placed in the basement and in March or April recharged it. This year I stored at our lake house, in my office closet, on the shelf, and expect to move it to a storage room after some renovations are completed.

It would be a good idea to clean it up a bit at that time, and make sure the battery is fullwith distilled water.

For the past few years I have used what are called "battery maintainers" while my two boat batteries, WIFE's jet ski battery and lawn mower battery are in storage. They sense any decrease in voltage and automatically charge the battery, shutting off when the battery is fully charged. These are safe and convenient devices which I believe have added years to the life of all my batteries.

Mine are a 1.5 amp made by SOLAR. Both West Marine and Boat US carry another brand which I can't recall off hand.

I think Sears sells a battery maintainer for around $10.00.
