From the beginning I was taught the jib sheets must be routed outboard of the mainmast shrouds. However, I’m loathe to admit I have forgotten whether the sheets are routed above or below the lifeline, and inboard or outboard of the lifeline stanchions, and perhaps which of the stanchions. Of course all of this happens forward of the block attached to the jib track.
What is the seamanlike method?

Fred,

The routing of the jib sheets is going to depend upon the size jib you have. Mine is 100% and is routed inside. A 110% will probably still route inside. 135% or 150% will most likely route outside.

In my opinion, the best advice for you is to sail close to the wind. Sheet in tight and look for a natural flow of the sail and lines. Reroute the sheets until it looks right.

Hope this helps.
