I needed to replace my lifelines and after looking at the CD kit and the Suncor Quick Attach products, I went with Suncor https://www.defender.com/pdf/sun_gate_kit.pdf and Garhauer.

Starting from the bow, I have a 'Turnbuckle' ending with a 'Gate Eye' and Garhauer Stanchion gate brace on the stanchion closest to the cockpit. The 'Gate' portion starts with a 'Pelican Hook' and continues to the stern rail to another 'Turnbuckle'. This setup allows the 'Gate' portion to be 'open' yet all the lines from the gate to the bow are under tension. Turnbuckles at each end allow me to control the tension on each segment.

The CD kit is one continuous line from the bow to the stern where it attaches to the stern railing with a pelican hook. I see 2 problems with this:

(1), if the 'gate' is down, the line has no tension all the way to the bow. If you go forward and trip and grab for it, there is nothing there to hold you. By breaking it up into 2 lines (the forward section and the gate section), the line is always under tension forward of the cockpit. Hence the need for the gate bracket.

(2) it forces you to climb aboard at the very back of the cockpit. On my boat (89'), the step into the cockpit is a the very front of the cockpit.

Also, never use vinyl coated lifelines, they hide corrosion.

Hi William,

'Just curious ... why did you choose the Suncor Quick Attach kit over the CD lifeline kit?

I need to replace my lifelines, so I'm interested to hear if "the price was right," or something else swayed your decision.

Thanks in advance for the info!
