Has anyone seen or thought of installing a bowspirit on a Catalina 25? Some of the Catalina 27's (tall rigs) have a small bowspirit. I was thinking of doing this just for the aesthetics, not for any performance reasons. Was wondering if this was done should I move the head stay to the end of the bowspirit (about 2' extension) or not. If I did, how badly would this affect the performance, moving the CE forward. If too much of an adverse affect, would probably just install an anchor roller and leave the head stay (with furler) where it is.
Thanks for any opinions.

Hi Bruce,

I have not seen a C25 with a bowsprit - functional or otherwise. But, a few years ago a C250 skipper added one to his boat to help with flying his cruising spinnaker. Here's the link to the Tech Tips section of this website that shows his "lash-up".

Should you move the forestay forward?? I'd say no.

hi Bruce,
this is just my opinion but if you moved the stay forward it would change the angle and you would need to recut or have a new jib built.

I do think any boat looks better with a bow sprit though. I would be interested to know what it looks like when you're done.

Hi Gang,

There was a cool product called the "Kingsprit" marketed in the Mainsheet for awhile. It offered anchor storage and was made of Stainless steel.

Have any of you seen one?

To put the forestay on the sprit, you'll need to run a stay with a turnbuckle from the sprit down to a heavy fitting on the bow to take the load from the forestay. I also suspect your roller genny would have to be recut to raise the clew. I agree with Bill... Don't. The sprit can be a pretty anchor holder.

Thanks for the replies. I guess the overall opinion is to not attach the forestay to the bowsprit. I just wanted a bowsprit for the appearance. I like the look of an older boat with lots of teak. Trying to think of a few places on BellaSera to add some more teak. (I use Cetol so maintenance is no problem) Just in the planning stages right now.
Thanks
