My old Honda is biting the dust! But what brand 9.9 hp or 10 hp on the market will fit in the motor transom area?
I know I need a long shaft 25 inches, but what motor fits?

I have a tohatsu 9.8 HP extra long shaft. It fits well. drives the boat at hull speed and is long enough to work in big waves.

It is also the lightest motor its size and I am able to take it on and off by myself for servicing, hurricanes, etc.

Dave, Tohatsu no longer offers the 9.8 ultra long shaft 25". If you want a 25" shaft and Tohatsu you have to go for the 9.9 that is a fuel injection model that in mho is a real step forward over troublesome carb engines. There are also 8hp engines that will push the boat adequately and could save you some boat bucks.

Another question?
The Tohatsu has the exhaust through the propeller, correct? How is the reverse working, does it stop well or is the power not that great in reverse?

I have the Tohatsu 9.8 25" that I got in the spring of last year. I think I got the very last one. As far as reverse goes it's compares to my Honda 9.9 that I replaced. Of course in an emergency you can never have enough reverse or forward for that matter but you can only expect so much from 10hp.

David,

The transom design has changed after the 2000 model year.
Here's an archive post with the details and photos.

That post in interesting Russ. On my 2004WB there is some kind of bolted on transom extension that has the engine away from the transom by about 1 foot. I just assumed that was how they came, but perhaps not from looking at that post. I guess probably the original owner added it. I'm curious if others have the extension..?

I have a WB hull #206 ('96 I believe) and previously had a 9.9 Honda long shaft. I now have a Tohatsu 9.9 extra long shaft that I mounted a couple of days ago. The fit is still good although the Tohatsu head seems quite a bit larger.
I used to turn the Honda in conjunction with the rudder when maneuvering in and out of my slip; not sure if I will be able to do that with the Tohatsu. I chose the Tohatsu over a new Honda based on price and the fact that the Tohatsu has FI. I always used to disconnect the fuel line after docking in order to run the carb dry. I found this was necessary to help prevent residue buildup in the carb. With the fuel injection on the Tohatsu, that won't be an issue.
I purchased a 2019 model, 25" shaft (XL), electric start, online via OnlineOutboards.com for about $500 less than the Honda. Here is the same thing in a 2020 model: https://onlineoutboards.com/collections/tohatsu-9-9-hp-outboards/products/2019-tohatsu-9-9-hp-mfs9-9eeful-outboard-motor

I bought the Stazo SmartLock to use with the Tohatsu but it wouldn't fit in the small transom area of our 250's. I've seen photos of the same lock being used with the Honda I used to have... maybe that would have prevented it from being stolen!
