This is one of the very few electronic signals the USCG currently accepts in place of pyrotechnic flares for your night distress signal. The advantages I see are (1) much easier to use, (2) operates floating in water, (3) you only need one (it goes for 60 hours), and (4) does not have an expiration date--no disposal issue. (The USCG requires that you replace the battery annually.) It comes with a distress flag for daytime use, so the combination meets the day/night signal requirements. It's $30 off at WM today ONLY--that's 30% off and even $30 less than Defender. I'm on my way...

All my flares were out of date and was about to have to spend money to replace them tomorrow. This ad popped up on my phone at 7:30 this morning and by 8:03 I had one paid for. Picking it up tomorrow.
Yup--one package of expiring hand-held flares is half the sale price of this one.

Google pointed to Binnacle.com, which says it is NOT. You still have to set fire to something in Canada. (Hope your night-time emergency doesn't include a fuel leak.)

Fuel?... what fuel... All 125 gallon of it. Oh boy... that is something to have to get used to as opposed to running an entire two month season going a 1000 plus sea-miles on a couple of hundred dollars worth of fuel
Granted a 40nm day cruise took us all day instead of a couple of hours it should take now. We're most likely going to search for marinas selling fuel rather than tranquil anchoring spots.
Two things for sure... we will be very conscious of sailboats and giving them a wide berth. The second point we intend is that if we don't like it we'll sell the gas slobbering noisy, wave making, boat and go back to our previous boating life
For now we will be in Hawaii until mid May volunteering. We'll keep you updated.

I jumped on this sale. Thanks for the heads-up, Dave! I would have totally missed it. Does WM have a special item on sale every Friday? Or did you get lucky?
I don't know about every Friday, but there have been a number... I've jumped on two things in the past year--both at substantial discounts. I suspect you need to be a "member" to get the notices--that also gets you "reward certificates" after you've bought enough stuff (1% of purchases). A BoatUS membership makes you a "Gold" WM member, which gets you 4% certificates ($10 for every $250). I have the added benefit of getting Defender prices matched at my neighborhood WM store, since Defender is about 15 minutes away.
(Sounds like a paid commercial... I have no interest or connection.)

I to am just a West Marine customer who gets e-mail blasts weekly and the current spiff is a two-for-one sale for select items including winches. Anyone looking to upgrade should check it out.

We picked up two Group 27 AGM batteries from our local West Marine yesterday. 20% off made it a deal I couldn't refuse. Did the BOGO free deal on a two pack of fenders and boat soap. Picked up a very nice rechargeable LED handheld spotlight for 50% off. Sta-set rope is also on sale, so I'm going to be replacing my main sheet also.
Supposedly West Marine will match any lower price anywhere, whether you live by a Defender or not. I haven't tried it yet, since I never buy anything at West Marine unless it's 50% off, but it's worth noting if you have to buy something there not on sale. I think you have to call an 800 number to ask for the refund.
