I'm posting in the General Forum because most of us have outboards.
I bought, with the Assoc. discount. a Tohatsu outboard a few years ago. It's black but now sitting out in the sun it is getting dull. Has anyone waxed your outboard and if so what did you use?
I know I should buy a cover and I will but I would like to see it (just the engine cover) shine again.

I use Nu Finish, a auto polymer finish, instead of wax. I suspect your motor has something similar to an automotive finish (excluding the clear coat, which Nu Finish sort of simulates). Except for one unfinished plastic piece, my big Honda is still a gleaming silver after 12 years.

I wax it once in the beginning of the season. I also keep a cover on it when it's not in use. Just plain old Turtle wax with Carnuba that I also use on the hull.

In recent years due to sun exposure some of the coating peeled off of my outboard.
I thought about painting it, but it would never match.
Luckily the plastic under the paint is about the same color as the topcoat - only matte, so it’s not a color contrast.

The cover on my Honda 9.9 has some scratches and the labels are slowly disintegrating in the summer and winter weather on the boat.

I have chosen not to re-finish it or replace it, since our docks are open to the public. The outboard engine has functioned magnificently over the 15 years I have owned the boat (and presumably the 3 years prior since its purchase by the PO), and I prefer to keep this "ugly disguise" that makes it a really stupid thing for some creep to steal!

Not too bad for 16 years old...

John, My friend did that kinda to his new 25hp outboard. He switched the cover with an old ratty looking 15hp cover to make it look a little less desirable.
