Anyone using a Hawkeye depth finder with a shoot through the hull transponder in a Catalina 25 swing keel??

I have a hawkeye depth finder with a shoot through the hull transponder but I have a fin keel.

I mounted the transducer under the sink with some life caulk. It works adequately. Cheap, simple, effective.

I’ve had a Hawkeye for about 8-10 years. I mounted it to shoot through the hull using toilet bowl wax for mounting that works best at approximately 65-70° installation temperature.
I installed the transducer beneath the quarterberth right next to the old through hull. You could also mount it beneath the vee berth by the head sink through hull fitting.
I’ve had no trouble with it however when passing over thick muddy bottoms it will occasionally read — — —.

I have had three over many years. The reason I’ve had three is one of my kids threw the cover in the lake at the end of a season and I forgot to buy a new cover. Without the cover, the display won’t last one season. The second display flaked (possibly my fault) but was quickly replaced under warranty.

You can’t beat the price. It usually works well too. I mounted mine under the vberth in front of the thru-hull.

I’ve read elsewhere on here that if you have bubbles in the goop you use to stick the transducer to the hull, you’ll have some trouble getting readings. Likewise if you mount it in a position where there is turbulent water under the boat, you can also have problems.

Seth,your post reminded me about how I mounted the display.

I still had the original enclosure from the old depth meter. I pulled out the old guts but kept the front glass panel and the rear metal cover with the screw terminals. This makes for a virtually weatherproof case.

I finagled a bolt through the rear panel with an offset to mount the display on, and as far as you can tell, I’ve just updated the old display with a new one.

I’m glad I never had to worry about keeping the weather out of the display unit.
