I started to replace the pintles on my rudder, and look what I found:

From the elongation of the bolt holes, it appears that the rudder had been damaged and flexing for sometime. I'm surprised that it didn't snap in half at anytime. It appears to me that sometime ago, the rudder hit something, pulling the bottom gudgeon off the stern and cracking the rudder.

I thought very seriously about trying to repair it, but decided against. Instead, in addition to new gudgeons, I ordered a new HDPE Kick-up rudder from CD.

Classic bottom pintle crack. You could spend a lot of time and effort to try and fix it but others have been down that road just to have the rudder snap eventually. IMO you did the right thing by just replacing it. A C25 in my Marina has the HDPE rudder. He's had it now for 10yrs without any problem. Maybe you did or didn't hit something but when I replaced my pintles the bolt holes in the rudder looked identical to yours. I think whoever installed them at Catalina just eyeballs it with a hand drill.

When I got Limerick my rudder had the same issue so I decided to bite the bullet and replace with a balanced rudder. I have the balanced HDPE rudder going on my 12th season and am very happy with it.
