I have a dahatsu 8hp outboard.
Make and HP has no bearing on my question...

Any idea why I cant pull the cord to start it?

The electric start works just fine!

Check to see if it's in gear. You can't pull start most ob motors in gear.

I've got an 8HP Suzuki that does the same thing from time to time. I just make short jerks on the rope until it releases. Nothing hard, just short jerks and it will finally release. Sometimes takes 10 - 12 before it releases.

In my case I can pull start mine in gear (forward or reverse), probably because it was built in '89 before some of the safety features were added.

There is this ridiculous little o-ring on the recoil lock cable that broke. The cable is connected to the gear shifting lever that actuates this little cam thing that only allows the recoil pull start to only work when the motor is in neutral.

Great to get at the root cause of the problem. I’m all for safety lockouts, but it requires a quality engineering design to avoid a kluge. We see too many afterthought designs in safety add ons
