I saw this on the news, As a side note you are supposed to invert and shake up extinguishers routinely to avoid the material inside from caking. Extinguisher maintenance 101.

Interesting -- I never heard of shaking an extinguisher to avoid caking but it makes sense. I have often wondered how long before getting rid of an extinguisher. I seem to have a couple that are over, or close to, ten years old -- but still have the arrow pointing well into the green (indicating still charged). My guess is that regardless of charge indicator fire extinguishers should be replaced every three to five years?

I heard it somewhere in my past so I looked it up just to be sure.
"Pressure within an extinguisher can be conveniently checked through a pressure gauge. “ABC” class extinguishers (ammonium phosphate) have the tendency to fail due to solidification of the chemical in the canister base. Homeowners and inspectors can delay this process by periodically shaking the extinguisher."

I've been shaking my extinguishers for many years now, at least going back to the early 80's. You can tell immediately if it has "caked" at the bottom if you do not feel anything moving inside when you shake it. I'll have to check my serial numbers with this recall.

Note: When you're looking at the Kidde site page about the recall, in the upper-right corner is a picture of units that are not involved in the recall. I have two of those and one that is involved (with a straight, slotted handle). After you enter the data on the claim form, it shows you specifically which of your unit(s) are or are not involved.
