I am making my own spinnaker pole. With online prices at $500 or higher, I decided to make my own for our C-22. I should be able to come in close to $300, plus another $100 for control line blocks. From the same local shop where I bought the pole stock for my whisker pole, I got the 8 ft. 2" dia. alum. pole for about $75, which they cut to spec for me to 90.5", bought two Forspar Ultra spin pole ends online for about $180 (they make up the remaining 5.5" for the 8' max length, foam rods, 1.5" dia. at Hobby Lobby for flotation to go inside the pole, about $12. I already have in stock mounting screws for the pole ends, 4 ea. 10-32 x 3/8" stainless machine screws, but had to buy a thread cutter and matching drill bit, about $20 at Ace Hardware. I also have in stock sufficient line for the topping lift and pole downhaul. Control line blocks, had 2, but bought more for another $50. I have sufficient lines in stock for the halyard and pole control lines, but may buy new sheets when I find a good used spinnaker.

Critical is getting the correct pipe internal diameter to match the pole end fittings, 1.870". Even so, I still had to sand the pole end fittings a little bit, one went in easy, the other I had to tap in with a rubber mallet. I called forspar about placing the machine screws. I was going to use 2 each. He suggested 4 each, placed at 2,4 8 and 10 o'clock to not interfere with the spring mechanisms.

Also, the reason I went local for the tube is that shipping a very long item like that is very expensive.

Sounds like a solid plan, but be careful about weight: too little and it will not work, too much and you have other issues!

A 2" dia. pole is what CD sells for the C-22, so I should be in good shape there. My pole is 6061-T6 aluminum, 2" outside dia. and 1.870" inside dia., which is what the Forspar pole ends specified, wall thickness is .065". If anything it might be slightly heavier than a purchased Forspar pole, and the topping lift can handle that.

David, I made mine. I had not been able to find the correct pole wall thickness with the correct ID at the local metal supplier. Tube is 2" dia, with .125 wall and is 6061 T-6 alum. That caused me to machine a couple of adapters for the ends. The pole was not anodized alum so I cleaned and fine sanded then clear coated with acrylic spray. The pole and metal for the adapters were not expensive, however, the pole ends were. I laced "D" rings in the middle for the guy & topping lift rather than using a bridle. Seems to work well-so far. Good luck with your project.

I used spare line I had in stock for the guy and topping lift, tying a loop in each one at about the middle. About all I've got left is to test dunk the pole to see if the flotation tubes will work, Loctite the screws holding the pole ends in place, and trying it out. Oh yeah, I still need to string the halyard and topping lift. I bought a used C-22 spinnaker for $300. Trying to keep the whole project around $700.

I made it to the lake today with the new pole to see if it will float. Passed that test easily. The Hobby Lobby styrofoam worked great. Next step is to Locktite the screws and splash the boat to try it all out. Got the tweaker blocks in last week. I'll add cleats for them later. Won't be this weekend, got a todo punch list for my daughter.
