Ok I see the problem for the plug on an 85 10hp. DISCONTINUED! Honda might have carried over that part when they started making the 9.9 but gave it a new part number. Does your plug look like this in the photo below? If so this is from a 9.9. One prong horizontal and one prong vertical. If not a perfect match, its close and might need a little fabricating but with an engine this old parts are going to get discontinued as time goes on. Anyway it is #4 in this diagram and is available. http://www.iboats.com/Regulator/dm/cart_id.576957159--session_id.643194111--view_id.1325697

I agree, you can usually figure things out with a little homework looking on line, then visiting your local dealer. I look at the schematics on boats.net for detailed exploded views of the parts, then call the shop in my neighboring town to see whether they've got them in stock. They are generally pretty resourceful.
i apologies for my late response. I have an older 10 hp. I think 1985.. I need both ends of plug. You think the inside engine part will adapt from 9.9 to my older 10?
I think your going to have to adapt the plug and receptacal because when I did a search for the plug and receptacal for your 10hp the parts are discontinued. I doubt it would be a direct swap but they look similar and with a little adapting might work. Another way would be to use a two wire waterproof plug that would connect outside or inside the cowling.A third choice if your not comfortable doing this is to take it to an outboard repair shop. The can easily wire in a generic plug for you.

...which might be why Honda was willing to discontinue that part for a 32-yr-old motor. There's likely something generic that fits and works fine.
