Well, the new owner of Heartbeat asked me to help move the boat. I had it at Gregory in Detroit. She wanted it in Curtice, OH. Saturday was bad for her, but Sunday was ok. The only bad news was the wind direction. Forecast was 13-15 out of the southwest. Our course direction was 270 to 200 - wind on the nose.

So we started out yesterday at 9. Half throttle on the 8 horse Tohatsu wasn't keeping us over 6 knots, so I bumped it up a touch - maybe 60%? That way only the bigger waves would know us down below 6.

We needed to go upriver a mile or so, and then turned down. Aside from 16 knots of wind dead on the nose, it was a nice trip through Detroit.

The wind laid down a little through the downriver cuts. I just stayed in channel on the right side. It's pretty straightforward, but you need a chart.

The waves entering Erie were a little tough. I am not sure if it's shallow water or what, but we had to break through couple miles of 5 footers before it laid down a bit. Wind was still dead on the nose, so no sails.

We followed the GPS across Erie, but checked the chart from time to time. We had the biminy up, which I have used only very rarely. I almost always sail and it's hard to work the sails around the biminy. With the heat and sun it was nice to have some shade.

The last 2 miles the wind shifted just enough that I could get some draw on the main. It must have been working because we saw 7 knots at one point.

Entrance to the marina was really easy. Drive in between the red and green. Find your slip. Park.

In the end, it was just over 55 NM in 8 1/2 hours. (The current push down the river helped!)

My thoughts on the trip:
You need a chart. (I knew that, but it helps to be reminded.)
The Tohatsu burns just under 1/2 gallon an hour. (I hadn't had a run long enough to gage the usage.) Surprisingly, that is 14 mpg. Pretty good for a boat!
Heartbeat makes an ok motor launch when you have to go distance. It's not fast, and it's bouncy in the waves, but it does the job.

I'll miss this boat.

Well, there is a race ready Express 27 with carbon fiber sails for sale in the area. Not sure if I am ready for another boat yet.

Also, I am a little concerned it's not big enough. It's only 2 feet longer overall. On the third hand, it's half the weight and the rating is almost 100 points lower.

Her name is Jaymie, and I have hinted what a great site this is and what great folks y'all are. She might show up sometime.
