A friend and I were discussing boomless sailing. Has anyone ever tried it on a Catalina 25 or heard of anyone trying it?
It seems you need a connection in the back of the sail and a traveler on the back of the boat, both of which are present on our boats.
We were thinking of trying it out sometime this fall. Any thoughts?

Sure it will work . . . if you're not fussy about sail shape

What tackle would you use? You would need to be able to do a quick release if hit by a gust.

I've never tried it, but the boom spreads the mainsail out when running downwind. Without a boom to hold it out, the mainsail would collapse the same way a jib collapses when sailing wing and wing without a whisker pole. Even when filled, however, it wouldn't be spread out as much as when a boom is stretching it out. You can sail boomless, but it won't be efficient. If the clew of the sail is attached to the traveler, the traveler won't allow you to ease the mainsail forward all the way to the spreaders, as you can with a boomed mainxail.

Even on a beat, you wouldn't the ability to adjust the tension of the foot relative to the leech as you can do with the headsail by moving the sheet car forward and aft--unless you put the traveler on some fore-aft tracks that might have to extend aft past the transom... Otherwise, the foot of the sail is probably going to be way too loose for anything other than very light air, so the boat will heel excessively and move slowly.

The consensus would appear to be "don't bother"

Not much value in it, but using the mainsheet would make it possible.
