I am helping a friend get his boat in the water. He has a cdi furler with some issues. I know many of you guys have cdi furlers, so i thought I would ask here. He is missing the special halyard. Is it neccesary to use the halyard with the ferrule. It looks like I could just use 1/8 amsteel for the halyard. It would be slippery, and fit through the slot. Will this work?

you have to be careful on the line, i orignally tried to replace mine with some double braid it didn't fit through the hole/sheave in at the top. the line that comes from CDI now is a hollowed out piece with a brass ferrule that keeps the line inside the track.

catalinadirect and sailrite both carry replacement lines. i would just pick up a new one from them.

Yes you have to have a ferrule or the line pops out of the groove when the forestay bends in a blow. Call them and order it.

told him to order one. If I had the amsteel, I would try it. maybe make a small stopper knot to keep it in the grove. He thinks his cdi furler is junk, because he does not know how to rig it. Hopefully I can help him out.

Sorry I did not see this sooner. You can also get it directly from CDI (at least they offered it to me a few years ago). I got a better price from http://riggingonly.com/.

I would absolutely not try to improvise something homemade. Why would you mess with something like this. Spend the $50 and buy the one that has stood the test of time.

By the way, the halyard will be much longer than it needs to be. When you attach the sail to it for the first time, shorten it to be just long enough for the bolt rope to enter the slot on the furler. If you don't do this, you'll have to lower the sail when it fails to reach the top of the mast. (Don't ask me how I know this.)
