Good morning
Boat's on the hard and mast is down.
I am going to replace the lights and electrical wires. Don't see any big problems there.
Also going to replace the VHF antenna and cable. The cable looks like a real handful. The holes in the mast are a real tight fit for the cable. I was thinking of tying on a length of 'braid' tag line to the wire, but don't think there is even enough clearance for that.
Has anyone done this swap out? Any advise?
Before I start, i'd like to have a good plan.
Thanks
Jay

I replaced mine earlier this year when I had the mast down. I'm not sure what it had for coax before, but it was smaller in diameter than the RG6 I used going back in. I had to drill the hole in the mast out a little to get it to squeeze thru. On the bottom end, I used one the of the grommets that CD sells and drilled the hole out for the grommet. Ran the cable inside the mast and then worked up through the mast head before I bolted it back on. The bottom took some work to get the grommet situated, but it worked well in the end.

I was going to look for grommets. Now I know where to look.
I am planning on using RG-8X cable.

Jeremy, Since you've done it, I have a question.
Do the wires and cable run up a tube or are the lose in the mast?

I added a 3/4" conduit up the mast. I also switched to internal halyards at the same time. Getting the conduit pop riveted in place was tricky, but the 3/4 held the wires and the coax.

I wouldn't have bothered with the conduit if I wasn't going to run the halyards internally. Previous to that everything was just run loose up the mast.

Hi
I don't plan on changing to internal halyards, so if there is no tube, so be it.
Probably make fishing the wires easier. LOL

Without conduit the wires can bang around inside the mast which can be annoyingly noisy. Ziplock pieces of sponge every couple of feel to hold the wires still or use pipe insulation.]

Well, checked the mast with a flashlight and, surprise, there is a tube installed for the wires.
So, here's the plan.
Anyone, please let me know if you see a problem with it.
Take off the mast head.
Disconnect the anchor light wires
Take off the steaming/deck light and disconnect.
Cut the top connection off the VHF cable
FIND and disconnect the lighting ground
Pull all wires out the base with a tag line attached.
Drill the holes for the VHF cable to fit the CD grommets.
Use the tag line(s) to pull the wires through (along with another tag line)
Feed the VHF cable down from the top through new grommet. New PL connection will be already installed.
Connect the wire to new anchor and steaming light
Check with battery!!!
Install new PL VHF connection at bottom with grommet.
Reinstall mast head.
That should do it.
(I hope)

Not for your situation with a tube, but I just put large, long cable ties around the coax and four conductor cable (separately) without cutting off the tails. It seems to work fine. I was going to use a tube, but getting past the three compression tubes at the spreader was to challenging.

Hi Dave, not sure if the tube even goes up past the spreaders.
Guess i'll find out when the mast cap and steaming light come off.

Jay, Put a tag line on the steaming/deck light wires also along with the mast head wires. It will make it easier to fish the steaming/deck wires out the hole when you re-install the new wires.

DONE! A little bit of a pain, but done.
Of course the grommet that comes with the new elect wires doesn't fit the hole.
That's what black tape is for. LOL
