After several seasons of scupper frustration, I decided to improve upon the original Catalina design of the cockpit drainage scuppers. I was having repeat trouble with leakage and with streaking on the transom from dirty drain water. I also found the issue of standing water in the recessed area directly in front of the scupper tubes to be questionable.
After much thought and research on this forum, I decided to remove the recessed area and install new scupper tubes that could be fitted vertically, yet still drain completely.
I decided to go with the Marine-East Cyclodial L-shaped through hull. It requires some minor cutting/modification to fit this application but it otherwise worked great.
The original bronze through hulls cut out pretty easily with a dremel. The hole needed to be widened to 1 7/8", which was accomplished easily with a deep-set hole saw. The insides of the holes were coated with unthickened epoxy.
To remove the recessed area, I ground out the area to bare fiberglass and built it back up with with layers of fiberglass roving and matting until it was about 1/8" from level with the deck. After I installed the through hulls, I faired it out with thickened epoxy.
Here's the final product:
The through hulls were bedded with Life Seal. It drains the cockpit faster than it can be filled with a hose. No more standing water in the cockpit - and no more drip lines down the aft end of my boat!
Dual exhausts! Now for some chrome tips... I thought about using those fittings to replace the brass tubes (that had cracked and were leaking) years ago, but then I couldn't find them any more.
