Good afternoon all, Lots of work being done to Win Dancer. LED lights, Jabsco pump... Something new came up and i'm wondering if it will be a problem. After a while with a bungee cord around the mast to keep the mainsail slugs from falling out, I ordered the 'mast gater' from Cat Direct. I was in 2 sides for the cut out. But, my mast had only a cut out on the stbd side of the track. Called Cat Direct and they told me that my mast was most likely replaced at some point with a Cat 250 mast as theirs has the single side cutout. Here's the question - Can anyone help me understand if I will have any problems with this mast? I haven't checked yet, but is the standing rigging the same? Or, is this a non-problem? I believe it's been on the boat for years. Of course the PO is not around to talk to and I didn't spend a lot for the boat, so I should probably forget it. But i'd love anyone's feedback on the peculiar situation. Jay

The most important specification is the length of the forestay. According to sailboatdata.com, it should be approx. 30.84'. Attach a 50' tape measure to the jib halyard and raise it to the top of the mast. Note the measurement to the point where the forestay attaches to the chainplate. Measure the length of the knot, as well as the shackle on the end of the jib halyard. Add the two, and that should equal approx. 30.84'. Also, measure the height of the mast. If the mast height and the forestay length are to original specs, the boat should sail fine.
Sorry I can't provide more detail, but I have to go racing!

Your mast is probably fine and is original. My mast gate is the same only open on the starboard side. It all depended on who was cutting the slots on any particular day at Catalina. One side cut is plenty big for the slugs so really you only need the one side. Save the second one if the one you are going to make happens to fall overboard. CD gives you a large enough gate that has to be cut down to fit your gate. As you can see I had to cut quite a bit on mine or you might get lucky and it fits without cutting. Your # 5645 and I'm #5688 so I guess we had the same worker doing the cutting. You have to remember these boats were all hand made so there will be differences from boat to boat, Year to year.

Scott, do I feel better. I really wasn't sure about the mast as the boom was a Cat 25, not a 250. No internal outhaul or reefing. I should have the single gate tomorrow and will get it in on sunday. Thanks a lot Jay

By the way Scott, did you get the C25 gate? I ordered that first and it was WAY too big (too long). I looked at the C250 one and it was the exact size I needed. Maybe the guy at the factory was doing both that day and did them all the same LOL. Jay

I ordered the gate for a C25. As you say it is way to big but that is intentional. No two gates were cut the exact same in the masts so they give you a gate that is big enough to cover all but has to be cut and shaped to fit your own specific opening. I never looked at the 250 gate so I don't know if it fits.

I'll be heading to the boat tomorrow. Hopefully the rain holds off. I'll see if the 250 gate works. Also have two LED lights to install in the salon. I put a Mr LED red/white in the head (over the sink), boy is it nice. Maybe too bright, but the red is great. Then some strip LED accent lights under the shelves in the salon. Getting my inspiration from another poster. Jay

Well, I got the C250 gate installed, perfect fit. Also put two LEDs in the salon. I ordered the 'Goldstar'(?) the another poster recomended. Got them from Amazon. Work great. That's all for now Jay

The 250 mast would have aft facing spreaders which would not fit the stock C25 rigging and the shroud mounts would be all wrong as well. My mast is much different than most C250 owners as well. My mast is beefy and looks more like a C27 mast.

That is because you have a tall rig. They use a larger mast section than the C25 standard rig. I also had a tall rig.
