Hey all, I've a chance to purchase a used SIMRAD TP33 Autopilot. The guy in the 'yard' is asking me to make him an offer - I's never been used - I don't think he could figure out how to hook it all up. Anyway - I see new ones for $ 539 all over the place. I was going to make him an offer of $ 250. Does that seem reasonable? Anyone have experience with this model? Any "gotchas" ?
If you don't get the brass socket, pin, or power outlet, then yes, $250 is reasonable.
I installed the TP22 on my S2 7.9... it's a helluva design. better than my ST1000+ (but it should be its their heavier model). There are 3 wires from the TP22.. 1 is power, 1 is NMEA 0183, and one is the simnet connector (NMEA 2000 compatible). That's just an FYI.
The socket connects all these from the TP using the 1 wire to the socket, then 3 lead off the socket. Hence why I'd say $250 for a brand new TP22 is reasonable, without the "extras" that come in the box.
Hit me up if you need tiller drop brackets. I think I have 2 I've not used, kicking around, I'll sell cheap (only buy them if you need them of course). As luck would have it, I fell on my TP22 last weekend, broke the pushrod (internally) on my TP22... I ordered a new TP22, with hopes I can eventually get a hold of B&G/Simrad to get the right part for the device, and sell the whole thing as a kit, with hopes to make up some of my lost $$$ to the whole incident. So if I can't get Simrad on the phone for support I might sell a brand new (unopened) socket, pin, and brass bucket... so if you buy the TP22 without those things hit me up for that as well. I should know in a few days if Simrad will ship me the part I need to repair the TP myself. Raymarine wasn't real helpful (when I broke my ST1000+, I don't expect Simrad to be much better).
I single-hand frequently and I am looking to buy an autopilot in the near term - although I have not priced or considered the TP-33. From what I have seen of prices, that sounds like a good deal.
Having a tiller-pilot will make your life easier when tending to things on deck...
A friend of mine has a TP22 that failed. The push/pull rod locked in the extended position. He called Simrad and they had him ship it to them for repair. I am not sure of the age of his unit but it wasn’t real long from the time he purchased it.

Life is not a dress rehearsal. You will not get another chance.
