All joking aside. ..I'm glad I decide to check it this year. Second year of owning the boat and was told "everything is good to go" by the PO last year. Removed the leaky thru hulls last year but discovered this common problem with the turning ball and possible sinking issue over the winter on this site so it went to the top of the list to check before putting her in the water this year. Thanks to this site it might have saved my boat from sinking!
How is the cable? I did mine over 2 years ago with the complete kit from CD. I'm on fresh water but I know they suggest every 3 years in general but that would depend on the usage and frequency of cranking it up and down. I need to leave mine up at the dock because I only have 3 feet below the hull. On a mooring, it is suggested to leave it down in case the cable breaks.

My cable seemed fine. I did find a couple of meat hooks but I think it was caused by the cable not rolling up onto the drum right. I reinstalled everything today and made sure the cable coiled up nice and later flat in a single layer with only 2 wraps on top of each other. I remember hearing and feeling the cable jump off itself a couple of times last year so in going to watch it closer this year. I have to leave it in the up position due to water depth at the dock as well.

That's "fine"? I might call that partially broken.

If you have any meat hooks it is time to replace no matter what the age. I also replace the ball each time I replace the cable. I do this every 2-3 years. It is cheap insurance and then I have the cable as a backup if needed.
