apparently, my lifting pennet is in severe need of replacement. since i'm up on the hard over the winter it's pretty easy to see that it's only holding on by a few strands of the wire

i see catalinadirect has vectran ones. has anyone used these?

i'm a little apprehensive given that the rest of the hardware is all brass, seems like chafe would be an issue

Hi?

I have the 5mm vectran. Installed 9-10 years ago along with a replacement block (the 5mm replaced 3mm vectran). No problems. Will be checking it for wear again this year. There has been just a little wear/chafe around the brass turning ball but that vectran has been tough stuff. I raise and lower the centerboard quite often so I really give the lifting tackle a workout.

Info from owners manual updates lists Catalina using vectran (3mm) rather than wire starting 7/15/99. They went to 5mm vectran 10/7/03. The Catalina Direct kit appears to be a retro fit kit with appropriate replacement block for vectran. I'd say having already gotten 9-10 years out of it is doing good. I also measured the length and ordered an extra piece of vectran from West Marine so I have it when I need it. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that catalina shifted on the later models. I don't move my centerboard all that much so hopefully if there is a chafe problem it wont rear it's head until the following winter. :) if not, then i'll short haul and replace it. :(

If the boat is out of the water then best to take advantage of the easy access.

Thanks for the replies. i did end up ordering the replacement vectran line kit and brass sheave. we'll see how it works out.

is there a reason for the snatch block you used or is that standard equipment that came with the boat? mine came with a small harken carbo block.

It was the original block that needed, in my opinion, replacement (see previously posted photo) It created a lot of friction adding to the load of hoisting the centerboard. Since we found the, albeit somewhat over-sized, open block it could be installed without detaching the attached Vectran cable...


Brass turning ball... looking down through up-haul tube while the boat is in the water. It took a diver only minutes to attach the Vectran cable to the center-board and connect the cable to a fishing line to be pulled up through the tube into the cabin to be attached to the up-haul mechanism.
