Greetings all, I'm thinking of replacing the 8 hp aged Nissan with a used 06 Tohatsu 9.9, 4 stroke ele start. It appears to be in excellent condition. Is $ 1,000. a good deal? I've not had any experience with Tohatsu's. I have had Honda's which have been great even in old age.
Anyone in the group have good/bad things to say about Tohatsu's ?

82 C25 STD rig, FK.
Thanks in advance

Subject to a tank test, it sounds pretty good. I sold a 9-yr-old Honda 8 (no electric start or alternator) for $1500 back around 2002. (EDIT: I sold it for $1050.) See what the asking prices are on Craigslist for small outboards in your area, and remember those are just asking prices for things that haven't sold. I can't speak to Tohatsu longevity, but haven't heard anything bad.

You can also do a quick-and-dirty compression check by removing one plug, pulling the manual start rope, replacing the plug, then doing the same for the other cylinder. If the pull effort seems the same for both, the valves are probably OK. If it stumbles when running, that could be gunk in the carb--generally not a big deal to fix.

What's the shaft length? And is it not really a 9.8? (I think the 9.9 in that year was a 2-stroke.)

The Mercury and Nissan engines under 10 hp are built by Tohatsu with different add ons and the same powerhead. My opinion is that it makes no difference which of the major brands you use or swear by, they're all reliable with reasonable care. The "reasonable care" is the variable in used engines. I sold a 10+ year old Johnson XLS, electric start 2 stroke 9.9 for 6 or 7 hundred a few years ago.

Thats the year and model I have: a good engine. If your proceed, make sure the carb is not "gummed" up with old gas. Other than that, it should serve you well for years!

That is a little bit under half price of when it was new. If it runs well and starts well, sounds like a good deal. To be safe, get it checked out by a reputable repair person in your area.

I prefer Yamaha, but Tohatsu is adequate. XL shaft (25") is recommended.

If I were in the market for an outboard, I would consider myself lucky. Online Outboards has moved from Crossville, Tn, about 120 miles from me, to Dickson, TN, about 30 miles from my home. Cool!

The Tohatsu 9.8 hp 25" shaft electric start outboard is on sale from Online Outboards through tomorrow for $2,100.00 w/free shipping. Deal looks good, only about $50 more than I paid them for my Nissan 9.8 same features over 5 years ago.
