Water Coming Up Keel Hose

Hi,
Former owner of a Catalina-25 here. I just checked with the new owners of the boat who belong to same yacht club as we do and they told me water was coming up the keel hose tube when they went in reverse and also in big waves. I went down to check while they were at the dock and lo and behold water came bubbling up. The hose is right below the winch and is clamped below with no water coming out the lower end. We just replaced the whole keel lifting mechanism with a new winch and keel maintenance kit from CD. Never had this happen when we owned it.

Also the cable itself is rubbing against the winch side and doesn't seem to be centered. When I lowered it, it kind of jerked and clunked. Not smooth. Should the new owners be worried and what can I do to help them. I told them to just leave the keel down for the season. Boat is in water and won't be out until fall.

Is the cable on the correct side of the turning ball?
Are you sawing the hull with the cable?
Did you replace the wood wedge under the winch when you remounted it?

I did not install the cable so I can't verify that it runs behind the turning ball. That is the first thing I would check, but the boat is in the water. If the cable is NOT behind the turning ball and they just leave the keel down for the rest of the season (September) do you think it will be alright or should we pull the boat out to inspect (big $$ to haul and launch)

What is the purpose of the wood wedge? I don't believe it was used in the new winch install.

It sets the angle of the winch. It is just visible at the top of this photo of how to hold the new cable while you put the nut back on..

I left out the wood wedge when I replaced my winch. The cable promptly wound up on one side of the winch. I put the wedge back in and it straightened out.
It does sound like the cable might be on the wrong side of the turning ball. I would think that it would be pretty important that it get fixed.
I have had water come up the tube a couple of times but only when in hard reverse.

Water up the hose with a little to much throttle in reverse has been one of Pearl’s "features" since I got her, even with a new ball.. Fast moving water from the prop gets turbulent and refracts into the slot with enough energy to flood past the open side of the turning ball groove. Advance the throttle gently as the boat picks up speed.

Edit: You can see the turning ball with a bright flashlight.

I get water up the hose when lower the keel after launch. Air is replaced with water as the keel is lowered and it pushes water up the hose. I have replaced the cable, ball and hose several times from CD and really like the kit. Used the 2 hose clamps and have piece of mind that it is safe. A towel or rag stuffed in top of hose still allows the cable to slide but keeps water to a minimum. I used the hose to also to dump water from the icebox and that is another story.

Some have sliced a sponge to fit around the cable in he tube. I never had the problem.
