My 1980 C25 TR came with a backstay rigged with what appears to be 1/4" nylon line. Do people have recommendations for the type and size of line that I should use for the replacement? Many thanks, as always!
I also have an adjustable backstay. It looks like 1/4 of 5/16 rope to me. I would imagine low stretch. As for the length I have not removed mine to measure it. Catalina Direct has the hardware but no mention of the line.
I would recommend that you go with a HMWPE like Vectran, Amsteel, or any other brand if you want line instead of SS. Rigging is heavily loaded and you want very low stretch and very high strength. Line requires much more frequent replacement, but replacement is relatively easy. I'll stick with SS on my rigging, including the adjustable back stay.

I believe he is referring to the line used on the back-stay tensioner to tighten the back-stay.
Actually I have a block at the end of a shortened backstay and run a bridle of yachtbraid through it which is connected to a purchase. It is a common rig these days.
