My 89 Cat 25 TR has a fixed gooseneck, on the boom. Is there any advantage to switching to a sliding gooseneck to raise the boom 12" or can I just move the fixed gooseneck up 12"? I plan to have the mainsail shortened by 12" and loose footed by a professional sailmaker. I need the headroom in my cockpit.
I have done exactly what you describe above and it has worked out wonderfully. I think the slider gives you a little more flexibility when reefing also.
You may already know that CD sells the sliding gooseneck.
My hull # is A989. CD may be out of the sliding gooseneck; I called and they can't give me a price for one right now. I would prefer the slider. I may make it a winter project & see if they get any in later.
FWIW, if your boat is indeed a 1989, the hull number would be in the range of mine below. Depending where it falls in the complete serial number, the "A" may indicate the month of manufacture.
You may also have to cut a new mast gate after raising the boom. edit) Second thought is if you make the boom a slider you can insert the slugs then raise the boom. If the boom goes past the gate then you won't need a plate for the gate.

Good point Scott, when I raised my boom (by reducing the height of the main, the sliding gooseneck now resides (resting on a sail stop) above the gate.
