I need to remove the name which is painted on. What can I use to remove it?

I have successfully removed paint from fiberglass using oven cleaner.

To be safe, I suggest that you test the oven cleaner in an inconspicuous spot first.

Most paint removers will tell you on the label if they are fiberglass safe.

The main ingredient in oven cleaner is sodium hydroxide or lye. Probably works great.
It is extremely corrosive I know because it burned my forearms while cleaning my old oven.
I was wearing heavy rubber gloves but it soaked into my cloth sleeves.
It took about a minute and then it started stinging badly. Left marks too.
Be careful.

When done, wash with water -- tons of it. Then put a polish on. I went through this years ago and was ginger on oven cleaner and over the top with water and it worked!

If it's paint, paint stripper will remove it, but you have to be careful to only use the type that's made specifically for fiberglass. Ordinary paint stripper like you use for a house or car is too aggressive and will dissolve the gelcoat. Westmarine used to sell it (unless it has since been banned). After the paint is removed, a shadow of the old name will probably remain. The gelcoat surrounding the name gradually eroded, but the gelcoat underneath the paint did not. My advice is to just apply the new name over it and ignore it. It will fade away and not be noticeable.

Two possible options...
1) Stripper....I’ve used Soy-based stripper from Jamestown Marine. Like any stripper it’s efficacy is temperature dependent but it worked great for me in removing (mostly) several layers of bottom paint with seemingly no I’ll effects on the gelcoat or me.
2) Heat gun and plastic scraper. This works well for decals but possibly worth a try. Be very careful not to burn the gelcoat particularly if the hull is cold when you begin.

Oops....just saw Steve’s response....ditto to what he said.
