We have two batteries on our ’84 C25 that are wired to an isolation switch. I suspect this is the original switch on the boat. It recently started buzzing loudly as soon as I turn it on, in any position (1, both, or 2) and stays on until I turn it off. This buzzing is a deliberate (for lack of a better word) alarm type sound as opposed to the buzzing/humming you sometimes get from a transformer. Has anyone had this experience and know (good guesses are accepted too) what might be the cause?

Not exactly, but I’m gonna emphasize to get yourself over to West Marine (or on-line these days) and buy a new switch. This is probably corrosion on contacts causing arcing that is vibrating the switch and generating heat—possibly a lot! Then I’ll suggest two battery terminal fuses to protect from similar problems between the batteries and the panel.

Thanks for getting back to me. I should have mentioned I took the switch out with the intent to dismantle and clean it. I could not gain access directly to the contacts, but I was able to spray in CRC Electronic Cleaner. After this, the switch’s contacts felt much smoother. Unfortunately, the problem persisted. Thanks for the fuse suggestion; there are two fuses already in-line. I know this sounds odd, but I’m almost certain the buzzing is not heat-generated, but rather some sort of alarm.

I guess my old ears are failing me. It turns out the alarm sound was not coming from the isolator switch, but rather from the depth-finder which is near the switch. I had my daughter come out to the boat to help me track it down. She nailed it within two minutes.
