I think this is an 8ga cable onto a beefy butt connector. My KLEIN lineman pliers just barely made a dent on the connector. Would I want to hit it with a punch?

A decent set of ratcheted crimpers is always a good thing to have around. You just can't get the right compression from any type of pliers.

Thanks, as you can see i improvised with a vice., if it ever fails, i can easily start over.

While replacing some cables on my golf cart, I found this tool works pretty well to get a good crimp on the larger terminals:
