 Remote controls for Tohatsu 9.8 motor

When I bought the motor over 10 years ago a remote control was not available. Has anyone altered a tiller controlled motor and added a remote control? Can you help me figure out what parts are needed? Is it easy to remove the motor and disconnect/reconnect the controls?

Unless you have a particular need for remote controls, they can be a real nuisance on a small sailboat. Jib sheets and mainsheets slide off the cockpit seats and get wrapped around the levers and interfere with sail handling if you don't notice it before you tack or gybe.

I have the same vintage Tohatsu 9.8 with tiller controls and have toyed with the thought of adding remote control. My suggestion would be to contact Tohatsu, or an authorized Tohatsu dealer and have a chat with them about the possibility vs. feasibility of retro installing throttle and/or shift remote controls. There maybe a simple kit you can buy, or it may be way too complex to retrofit. At the end of the day, I determined the remote controls would not add much convenience as my real issue is tilting up and setting down the engine on the motor mount.

The engine mount is easy to raise/lower however hanging over the transom, reaching and releasing the pin to tilt the engine up at mooring and then again to release the tilt when using, at least for this old guy, is a far bigger issue. While an electrical auto-tilt feature is available, it is heavy and a battery drain (plus I am in salt water which would cause other collateral damage such as corrosion) so when all factors were considered I decided to stick with the on-engine shift and tiller throttle and not pursue the remote control options.
