At the last minute, Defender had sale on inverters and I thought, “Why Not?” Its a Xantrex ProWatt SW 600 Power Inverter: true sin wave, 2 outlets, digital voltmeter, USB port. My current spec barely meets the minimum requirements: 100Ah, 4 AWG (or very short 6 AWG) cable. Its mounted under the stairs, convenient to the cabin. It is independent of AC system and directly wired to the house battery.

I did a smoke test and starting at 100% SOC on the house battery, it will run a small shop vac for a minute before the voltage drops too low and the inverter shuts down to protect the battery. The purpose of installing the inverter is not to run a toaster or microwave, but to provide that “I MUST CHARGE MY (insert here: laptop, cordless drill, etc) RIGHT NOW” with no access to shore power.

If designing from the start with unlimited funds, I would have gone with a house battery bank of 2 6V GC2 225Ah batteries in the box, a small starter battery next to it, and 4 or 2 AWG cables. I would need a 20 amp battery changer (4 phase) and external bipolar ACR. Cost of the current setup (2 75Ah WM group 24: $320, charger/ACR $170 = $490). Cost of new setup (2 6V GC2 WM $500, WM starter battery $100, 20 amp charger ~$300, ACR $80= ~$1000) or x2 the current setup. Not sure if it would be worth it.

I bet it nice to have clean power on the boat after going without for so long. Mine could use a little updating and cleaning up. Nice job.
