This may be a silly question, but this stuff is hard to get my brain around. I am installing a new Blue Sea circuit panel http://assets.bluesea.com/files/resources/dimensioned_drawing/4352.pdf. I understand this panel requires a negative bus to terminate the ground wires from all the loads, and the negative bus needs to connect to the negative terminal on the back of the panel. Does it matter if the negative wire from the battery is connected to the negative bus, or can it be instead be connected to the negative terminal on the back of the panel? Perhaps a related question is: what purpose does the negative terminal on the back serve? Does it simply act to close the circuit for purposes of lighting the breaker switches? Thus does the breaker only act to break/connect the positive side of each circuit?

You can make an electrical connection from the negative on your battery to a negative bus bar or that negative terminal. It looks like the negative terminal is just a nicer connection for the negative lead from your battery, designed to make an easier connection to the negative bus on the panel.
